Tailoring the Process
Once the decision to adopt a systems development process has been made, the process should be tailored to conform to the specific needs and environment of the organization. One of the key principles in successfully applying a systems development methodology is to "do only those things that provide value to the project". Not every aspect of the methodology may apply to the types of projects being done in a given IT organization. The process may need to vary based on functional area, size of project, type of project, etc.
While it is unrealistic to expect to define (and maintain) a specific process for every type of project, it is advisable to define a minimum set of 'core' activities and deliverables that apply to the majority of projects. These components need to be publicized and guidelines need to be established to ensure their consistent and uniform use.
OtB can evaluate the needs of your organization and customize one or more processes to guide your systems development efforts. Instead of requiring each project manager to evaluate the entire methodology each time he/she starts a project, your PMs will be able to choose from a small number of project frameworks that incorporate best practices and are focused on their project's needs. Of course, the project managers can further customize these frameworks, as the need arises.
